The struggles vets face when they return to civilian life are well-documented. At Trauma Graduation, our goal is to establish a clear demarcation between one's time of service and the civilian life ahead of the graduate. To ensure a healthy transition, it is our belief that a debriefing/deprogramming ceremony is critical.
Our team is tbd. Maybe you. The goal is to roll this out nationally and ideally to every vet who completes their time of service. In year one, we hope to conduct 6 services and find psychological and social-work professionals to help us document and qualify the improvements our graduates realize when they tangibly put their time of service behind them.
Our graduation services are based on services conducted for Japanese service-people after WW2. Leaders from the community would join family and friends for a ceremony honoring their local service people. They were thanked and honored publicly, then they were told that they were now on a new mission: one of being a son, daughter, wife, husband, baker or banker. That was what their community and country needed from them and they were no longer needed in the role of soldier.
The beneficiaries of these services fared much better than did their American counterparts. The belief is that having a tangible demarcation established between one's time of service and one's civilian life is just as necessary as those offered at graduations or weddings. Matriculating to a new state of existence simply becomes clearer with a ceremony.
